The Backyard Quest for Inspiration

When dealing with writer’s block or with general sluggishness, sometimes it helps to take a walk to clear the head. Let’s not count the people who walk their dogs with one hand holding the leash and the other clasping the ever-present cell phone. They’re not paying attention to their surroundings.

Now, if you take the phone out of the equation, you can focus on the ground with the hope of finding a dropped coin, or you could watch where you’re going, but that sounds boring. The third option is to look up.

On an early morning walk, I encountered a colorful sky that started me on a quest to find an inspirational sunrise. Granted, no list of locations famous for their amazing sunrises will include my backyard, but that didn’t stop me from searching.

Unlike those social media-savvy dog walkers, I don’t usually carry my phone when I walk around the neighborhood. The day after that colorful display, I shoved my phone in my pocket and eagerly set off, hoping to capture nature’s beauty. On that particular day, though, nature slept in. I didn’t let that stop me. Eventually, I met with success. Below are a few early morning skies.

Sometimes, even when there aren’t any clouds, the sky still looks kinda cool just before the sun comes up all the way.

These few pictures (and I’ve got a ton more on my phone) don’t begin to express the beauty that can be found in exotic locations. Still, a sunrise close to home is nothing to sneeze at. Although sometimes I do sneeze when I look toward the sun. But that’s straying from the point.

The point is … stay off your phone when you take your dog for a walk. No, that wasn’t the point. The point is beauty is everywhere, and so is inspiration. The other point is when I look up, my problems don’t feel so big.
